Your future career
All tuition fees quoted relate to a single year of study unless stated otherwise. Tuition fees will be subject to an annual inflationary increase, unless explicitly stated otherwise. 2 EU students who are ROI nationals resident in ROI are eligible for NI tuition fees. International students wishing to apply to Queen’s University Belfast (and for whom English is not their first language), must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research.
Our BSc Artificial Intelligence (including foundation year) course is open to Home and EU students. We will consider students who have taken GCE A Level examinations or the International Baccalaureate https://www.metadialog.com/ (IB). Holders of the Tawjihi are not normally eligible for direct entry onto our undergraduate programmes without completion of a suitable foundation programme, such as one of our foundation pathways.
Course fees and funding

You can specialise in areas including computer security, web development and mobile apps, robotics and machine learning, speech and language technology, or 3D graphics and virtual reality. If you’re an international student who does not meet the entry requirements for this course, you have the opportunity to apply for an International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield International College. Upon successful completion, you can progress to degree level study at the University of Sheffield. This module focuses on modern artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and their inspiration from biological systems. Lectures introduce a range of AI and related approaches in the context of their relevant biological inspiration and also their potential application to real word problems.
This course would be of interest to students from computer science, philosophy, law and health sciences. You will learn how to engineer and evaluate AI systems and also engage in debates around the legal and ethical issues involved in the ethics of AI technology. The programme culminates with a research project, which you will undertake under the supervision of a member of staff and can also be undertaken with an external company or organisation. Typical projects include extending, improving or adapting existing AI theories or techniques to solve different problems or comparing competing techniques or tools to solve a particular problem.
Particular focus will be on the management framework that facilitate the accomplishment of the above three goals. Importantly the module will address the ethical framework of information security, the issues around privacy and data protection and the rights of private citizens to access strong encryption. Throughout the module connections with other aspects of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity will be emphasised through the examples and case studies chosen. These are just some of the key areas you will be able to apply in the wide range of artificial intelligence careers. This module builds on the foundation of object-oriented design and implementation found in CO320 to provide both a broader and a deeper understanding of and facility with object-oriented program design and implementation.

Do I need to learn C++ for AI?

It executes code quickly, making it an excellent choice for machine learning and neural network applications. Many AI-focused applications are relatively complex, so using an efficient programming language like C++ can help create programs that run exceptionally well.
They also take their time going through the lectures to ensure everyone is understanding as it is harder online to ensure everyone is following along but they do an excellent job. Mechanical Engineering resources include industry standard hardware and software. Our labs in Stoke are full of exciting equipment for you to use so that you can prepare yourself for the workplace when you graduate. If you were to join the course through our Foundation Year you would study ‘How to study’, Concepts of physics, Practical mathematics and other topics in key areas of AI and Robotics to fully prepare for a successful start of the degree. You can choose to complete a paid 12-month work placement between the second and third year of this course, which is a great opportunity to further develop your learning and to make valuable contacts for future employment.
Agile software projects
The MSc in Artificial Intelligence consists of six compulsory modules (inculding the individual project or internship) and five chosen modules. For the chosen modules, students select at least four from the list of selective modules, at most one from the list of optional modules, summing to five in total. The group project mostly runs in the spring term; the individual project or internship runs over the summer. In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year.

Holders of the Bachillerato together with a recognised foundation programme, such as the Birmingham Foundation Academy, will be considered for entry to our Bachelor degree programmes. One third of your time is spent on a project which can be chosen from a wide selection offered by staff members, or developed from your own idea. This usually involves writing a large piece of software and gives you the freedom to extend and demonstrate your skills in a manner of your choosing. In the other two-thirds of your time, you can choose freely from over 20 optional modules, including some specialist AI modules such as Intelligent Robotics, Neural Computation and Advanced Natural Language Processing.
The course has a multidisciplinary content spanning psychology, human factors, computer science and robotics. Each module is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical computer laboratory work, and tutorials. Module content is also made available online in our virtual learning environment, including recorded lectures and interactive exercises.
At this level, you will be expected to work independently but you will receive additional one-to-one support from your supervisor, who will be familiar with your chosen topic area. As you progress on the module, extra support will be available and this may take the form of group seminars, workshops and online materials that will help to develop your project. This module is intended as a theoretical and methodological introduction to the most widely used and effective current techniques, strategies, and toolkits for natural language processing.
Do I need physics to study AI?
A lot of the programming done and models created are based upon principles rooted in physics, which would allow you to get involved in this area of robotics and AI as well. Robotics and AI is a rapidly growing industry, and a physics degree will put you in a good position to pursue opportunities in the sector.
